<p>I know how you feel.  I’ve been there.  I can help.</p>
<p>First, what is anxiety?</p>
<p>In short, it is the fear of something that has <em>yet</em> to happen.</p>
<p>Real fear is a good thing.  If a saber-tooth tiger is chasing you, being afraid will help you survive.  Anxiety on the other hand sucks the life out of you.  It demoralizes you.  It weighs you down and inhibits you from taking action.</p>
<p>Anxiety arrives as stories that re-run in your mind.  Over and over.  They seem beyond your control. You feel victimized. Perhaps you fight your anxiety.  You get angry.  You tell yourself to SHUT UP!  But nothing seems to work.</p>
<p>There is but one root cause for anxiety.  It has nothing to do with the conditions of your life.  It is simply that you are not practiced in the art of presence.</p>
<p>I teach this art.  It is the mission of my life.  And I want to teach you.  To that end I’d like to gift you with 3 easy tools to greatly accelerate your ability to release anxiety and become immersed in the grace of the “here and now”.</p>

<h1 style="text-align: left;">Want &#8220;Lightness of Being&#8221; Right Now?</h1>
<p><strong>All around us is a life-giving, life-regulating power</strong> that always has been and always will be. It is the active aspect of the intelligence that is the Source of all life. I call it the Life Force.</p>
<p>The most healing, empowering, and creative act we can do for ourselves is to consciously connect to this force. This can only be experienced in the present moment. In the present moment connection is automatic.</p>
<p>Such a connection is<strong> not intellectual; it is a feeling.</strong></p>
<p>Having a mental understanding of the subject merely points the way to the experience; it is not the experience itself.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: left;"><strong>A</strong><strong> </strong><strong>Paradigm</strong><strong> Shif</strong><strong>t.</strong></h2>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p>Most people are caught up in trying, in exerting as much effort as they can to get their desired outcome. Few have learned how to <em>not</em> try. They have no experience of what effortlessness feels like, and therefore even less experience of the feeling of being connected to the Life Force.</p>
<p>“You can’t try to get it,” Dr. Milton Trager, developer of the Trager® Approach, said. “…to try is to fail. You don’t try. To try is effort and effort is tension. We don’t try. We just allow it to happen.”</p>
<p>People who consciously connect to the Life Force describe it as a feeling of peace, or lightness of being. Others use words such as stability, joy, empowerment, clarity, and a sense of homecoming. But whatever the words we put to it, what matters is the feeling in our body/mind.</p>

<p>The <a href="http://audreymairi.com/about/so-what-is-trager-anyway/">Trager Approach</a> is a modality that can help you consciously connect to the present moment. A Trager Practitioner uses touch and movement in a mediatatiive state to introduce a feeling experience of this. Trager is both a way to re-educate your body movement and an approach to living.</p>
<p>Those who embrace the <a href="http://audreymairi.com/about/so-what-is-trager-anyway/">Trager Approach</a> quickly learn that it works best when applied to all areas of life. For example, when you wash the dishes, or type at a computer, or give a lecture to a large audience, you can use the principles of the Trager Approach to enable yourself to show up in the present moment and &#8220;hook-up” to the feelings inherent in the Life Force.</p>
<p>This is where your power comes from, and where lasting healing is accessed.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: left;"><strong>How??</strong></h2>
<p>To foster a connection I invite you to use a few simple tools. These tools can be used anywhere, anytime, and by anyone, no matter their physical condition. Dr. Trager called these tools Mentastics® (derived from the two words mental gymnastics).</p>
<p><strong>Three basic Mentastics are:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Pausing</li>
<li>Mindful breathing</li>
<li>Feeling weight</li>
</ol>

<p>They sound simple, I know, but when used consistently the effect on your life is profound. These tools will lead you out of</p>
<p>your spinning mind and into a present moment experience where your negativity floats away, leaving peace.</p>
<p>Imagine giving a speech and being able to release your anxiety, instead accessing clarity and joy. Imagine letting loose your apprehension over your aging mother’s health, and being able to access love and trust. Imagine after your vacation feeling overwhelmed by a three week back log of work, then letting it go to be replaced by a sense of stability and lightness.</p>
<h3><strong>Pausing</strong></h3>
<p>To clear a conscious pathway to the Life Force the first thing you do is… <em>pause..</em>. Before you can consciously open to the Life Force, you need to apply the breaks to your doing, both in your mind and body. Stop talking, stop walking, stop worrying, fretting, controlling and… <em>pause</em>&#8230; A pause helps you to become the observer instead of the reactor. It is a gateway that opens your body/mind to that intelligent life-giving, life-regulating power that is all around you.</p>
<h3><strong>Mindful Breathing</strong></h3>
<p>The next tool is…mindful breathing. After a pause you put your awareness on your breath. By doing so you take your attention from out there and place it in here. You become centered, like being at the hub of a wheel. At the hub, your perspective broadens, becoming multifaceted. Your assumptions soften. You realize you are not the pains you feel, or the thoughts you have—they are only one or two spokes of your wheel.</p>
<h3><strong>Feeling Weight</strong></h3>
<p>Now that you have paused your doing and your thinking and have centered yourself through mindful breathing, you enter a present moment experience by feeling weight. When you pay attention to the downward pull of gravity you enter into the physicality of the here and now. The next time you are putting the groceries away, doing the dishes, or lifting a hammer, feel the weight as you move the object through space. The next time you are holding the hand of someone you love, pause, breathe, and feel its weight. Rather than holding the hand up, let it rest in your palm. You will experience a positive life-affirming sensation.</p>
<p>This is a present moment experience.</p>

<ol>
<li>Pause. After reading steps 1, 2, and 3, let go of reading this article for now.</li>
<li>Become mindful of your breath—like an umbrella opening and closing.</li>
<li>Now shift your body from side to side. Feel its weight move through space.</li>
</ol>
<p>If you use these three simple tools throughout your day you will feel differently. You will get out of your head, out of the stories you tell yourself. Your awareness of the Life Force flowing through your body/mind will grow and bloom, and, in turn, so will your empowerment as well as your wellness, and creativity.</p>

<p>These works grew out of a desperate need to be able to cope with life, her children, and her Trager practice after her twenty year marriage fell apart. Her ability to teach and live in the present moment helped her gain equilibrium and move on to a better way of life.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h1 style="text-align: center;">Are You Projecting or Connecting?</h1>
<p><strong>Earthquakes, tsunamis, tornados, avalanches, hurricanes, war&#8230;</strong></p>
<p>So much devastation threatening our safety, our peace of mind. We seem to be living in a constant state of fight or flight not knowing when the next disaster will strike. Adrenaline levels soar, stressing our bodies and minds as past programming is easily triggered in these trying times.</p>
<p>How do we get out of this programming? How can we get our minds to stop spinning round and round the same internal stories, the same old scary thoughts and feelings that keep us in such a stressful state? How can we connect in a new way with our source of peace and well being so we can be a shining light in the face of so much darkness? How can we choose differently?</p>
<p>Many of our projections have to do with our inability to consciously connect to the here and now. In the present moment we are aware of our connection to the energetic component that is at the root of all life. This root has many names. Some call this Source, All That Is, God, the Web of Life, Zero Point, the Divine Matrix, or the Unified Field to name just a few. One of the names I often use to describe the active aspect of this source energy is the<em> Life Force</em>. Whichever term we use, what counts is the feelings of softness, of lightness, of peace and empowerment that arise naturally from this connection. With this conscious connection we can keep a clearer perspective on what is actually happening in our area of the world right now and therefore be of greater use if and when needed.</p>
<p>Few of us have a practical approach for staying connected to the  present moment, in our body, in the current situation that’s happening <em>right now</em>, with the person or situation that’s right in front of us, without all of those past stories skewing our interpretations and reactions.</p>
<p>Part of the difficulty of trying to stay present is that all our old programs are not only in our mind; they are in our body as well. Our body and mind are intimately connected. If we are not happy with our <img class="size-full wp-image-1151 alignright" style="margin-top: 10px;" title="2011-03-16_13-31-57" src="http://www.audreymairi.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/2011-03-16_13-31-57.jpg" alt="" width="287" height="224" />current situation, we can try to change our mind, but, if we don’t get the body on board we often fail to get the results we long for.</p>
<p>If we can’t be present we can’t connect. If we can’t connect, we diminish our influence in the world as well our internal peace and empowerment.</p>
<p>It’s that simple. It’s that important.</p>
<h3>Connect through the Trager Approach</h3>
<p>As the author of <a href="http://www.newworldlibrary.com/BooksProducts/ProductDetails/tabid/64/SKU/73191/Default.aspx" target="_blank"><em>Trager for Self-Healing</em></a>, as well as a certified <em>Trager®</em> practitioner, tutor and teacher (and Reiki Master), I’ve spent 26 years developing easy to use tools, derived from the principles of the <a href="http://audreymairi.com/about/so-what-is-trager-anyway/" target="_blank"><em>Trager Approach</em></a>. These tools assist the mind <span style="text-decoration: underline;">and</span> body to consciously experience the present moment.</p>
<p>The <em>Trager Approach</em> was first developed by Doctor Milton Trager. He created a body-centered modality that uses both table sessions and self-care movement explorations called <em>Mentastics</em>®, a term coined from the words “mental” and “gymnastics.” Both table sessions and <em>Mentastics</em> teach us what it <em>feels</em> like to connect to the present moment.</p>
<h3>A Table Session</h3>
<p>A client lies passively on a well padded table in a safe environment while a <em>Trager</em> practitioner, who has been trained to connect to the present moment, softly and gently transfers their experience of this connection into the clients body/mind through touch and movement. This touch generally includes rocking, elongating, fluffing and sculpting of tissue, muscles, and joints.</p>
<p>As a result, a client <em>feels</em> differently because the experience of being “connected” has been transferred through the quality of the practitioner’s touch. Dr. Trager, a master at this, changed the condition of a client’s body through his touch because he gave his clients the <span style="text-decoration: underline;">experience</span> of what it would feel like to be free of their past programming.</p>
<p>The results were profound and long-lasting.</p>
<p>Over the past four decades the International <em>Trager</em> organization has trained scores of professionals to impart these same results.</p>
<h3><img class="alignleft" src="http://audreymairi.com/newsite/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/2010-11-01_19.21.17.jpg" alt="" width="519" height="256" />Mentastics</h3>
<p><em>Mentastics</em> are the self care portion of the<em> Trager Approach</em>. They are innocent body/mind explorations that have the power to help us live consistently in the present moment. The more <em>Mentastics</em> are practiced, the deeper the present moment experience and thus the deeper and clearer our connection to other people and situations in our lives.</p>
<p>For me, <em>Mentastics</em> are the most powerful part of the <em>Trager Approach</em>. Why?  Because they can be used by anyone, anywhere, at anytime. They are a <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em>practical</em></span> and <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em>simple</em></span> way into the present moment.</p>
<p>Although going into a detailed chronicling of <em>Mentastics</em> in this short article is not possible, I will touch upon three of the most basic (which, by the way, are also the most profound).</p>
<h3>Simple.  Profound.  Powerful.</h3>
<p>There are many <em>Mentastics</em>, but the three most basic are: pausing, mindful umbrella breathing, and feeling weight. These three simple <em>Mentastics</em> give you a practical way to cope with our everyday stresses we encounter in our home, in our community, our country, and the world around us.</p>
<p>When we project we are invested in the story in our head, in the re- creation of our old melodrama. This melodrama has corresponding feelings in the body. These feelings manifest as headaches, anxiety, low back problems, stiff shoulders, or high blood pressure to name just a few. If you no longer want these feelings, the first thing to do is… <strong>Pause</strong>… Just for a few seconds allow a little space to enter your mind, allow a little distance between you and your melodrama.</p>
<p>It doesn’t have to be long. Just for this moment… Pause… Let go of the story. Let go of the drama. For now, step off the spinning wheel. Pause…</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">That’s the first of the <em>Mentastics</em>. It’s profoundly simply. Paradoxically, it is also the hardest to do. Our programming has momentum. It tells us to keep going, keep spinning. But the best action we can take is to stop our physical and mental activity and… pause.</p>
<p>In the midst of this pause, notice your breath.</p>
<p>Now, breathe three dimensionally into your front, sides, and back, like an umbrella opening and closing. Inhale. Open. Exhale. Close.</p>
<p>This is the second of the <em>Mentastics</em>, <strong>Umbrella Breathing</strong>. It is also extremely simple. But in it’s simplicity is it’s power. You can practice umbrella breathing anytime, anywhere.</p>
<p>Once you’ve paused and put your attention on your breath, the third step is to <strong>Feel the Weight</strong> of something as it moves through space. This brings the feeling of the present moment into your physicality. It could be a can of beans you’re putting away. It could be the weight of your arms or hands swinging at your sides. It could be the weight of your purse or briefcase. It could be the weight of your tail bone. It could be anything.</p>
<p>When life gets to be too much, bring your spinning mind and body into the present moment. “Pause”… then, be attentive of your “Umbrella Breath.” Lastly, “Feel the Weight” of something as it moves through space. You will find that rather than spending your day unconsciously <em>projecting</em>, you have spent your day consciously <em>connecting</em> to Spirit.</p>
<p>If you consistently practice these three things in concert you will perceive a definite shift in your awareness toward ease, happiness, better health, and empowerment.</p>
<p>Try it now.  It’s simple.  In it’s simplicity is it’s applicability.</p>

<h1 style="text-align: center;">Right Now?</h1>
<p><strong>All around us is a life-giving, life-regulating power</strong> that always has been and always will be. It is the active aspect of the intelligence that is the <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Source of all life</span>. I call it the Life Force.</p>
<p>The most healing, empowering, and creative act we can do for ourselves is to consciously connect to this force. This can only be experienced in the present moment. In the present moment connection is automatic.</p>
<p>Such a connection is<strong> not intellectual; it is a feeling.</strong></p>
<p>Having a mental understanding of the subject merely points the way to the experience; it is not the experience itself.</p>
<h3><strong>A</strong><strong> </strong><strong>Paradigm</strong><strong> Shif</strong><strong>t.</strong></h3>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p>Most people are caught up in trying, in exerting as much effort as they can to get their desired outcome. Few have learned how to <em>not</em> try. They have no experience of what effortlessness feels like, and therefore even less experience of the feeling of being connected to the Life Force.</p>
<p>“You can’t try to get it,” Dr. Milton Trager, developer of the Trager® Approach, said. “…to try is to fail. You don’t try. To try is effort and effort is tension. We don’t try. We just allow it to happen.”</p>
<p>People who consciously connect to the Life Force describe it as a feeling of peace, or <span style="text-decoration: underline;">lightness of being</span>. Others use words such as stability, joy, empowerment, clarity, and a sense of homecoming. But whatever the words we put to it, what matters is the feeling in our body/mind.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.audreymairi.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/2011-03-07_14-58-49.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-1115 alignleft" style="margin: 5px; border: 1px solid black;" title="2011-03-07_14-58-49" src="http://www.audreymairi.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/2011-03-07_14-58-49.jpg" alt="" width="553" height="238" /></a>The <a href="http://audreymairi.com/about/so-what-is-trager-anyway/">Trager Approach</a> is a modality that can help you consciously connect to the present moment. A Trager Practitioner uses touch and movement in a mediatatiive state to introduce a feeling experience of this. Trager is both a way to re-educate your body movement and an approach to living.</p>
<p>Those who embrace the <a href="http://audreymairi.com/about/so-what-is-trager-anyway/">Trager Approach</a> quickly learn that it works best when applied to all areas of life. For example, when you wash the dishes, or type at a computer, or give a lecture to a large audience, you can use the principles of the Trager Approach to enable yourself to show up in the present moment and &#8220;hook-up” to the feelings inherent in the Life Force.</p>
<p>This is where your power comes from, and where lasting healing is accessed.</p>
<h3><strong>How??</strong></h3>
<p>To foster a connection I invite you to use a few simple tools. These tools can be used anywhere, anytime, and by anyone, no matter their physical condition. Dr. Trager called these tools Mentastics® (derived from the two words mental gymnastics).</p>
<p>Three basic Mentastics are:</p>
<ol>
<li>Pausing</li>
<li>Mindful breathing</li>
<li>Feeling weight</li>
</ol>
<p>They sound simple, I know, but when used consistently the effect on your life is profound. These tools will lead you out of your spinning mind and into a present moment experience where your negativity floats away, leaving peace.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.audreymairi.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/2011-03-07_14-38-08.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-1104" title="2011-03-07_14-38-08" src="http://www.audreymairi.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/2011-03-07_14-38-08.jpg" alt="" width="287" height="190" /></a>Imagine giving a speech and being able to release your anxiety, instead accessing clarity and joy. Imagine letting loose your apprehension over your aging mother’s health, and being able to access love and trust. Imagine after your vacation feeling overwhelmed by a three week back log of work, then letting it go to be replaced by a sense of stability and lightness.</p>
<h3><strong>Pausing</strong></h3>
<p>To clear a conscious pathway to the Life Force the first thing you do is… <em>pause..</em>. Before you can consciously open to the Life Force, you need to apply the breaks to your doing, both in your mind and body. Stop talking, stop walking, stop worrying, fretting, controlling and… <em>pause</em>&#8230; A pause helps you to become the observer instead of the reactor. It is a gateway that opens your body/mind to that intelligent life-giving, life-regulating power that is all around you.</p>
<h3><strong>Mindful Breathing</strong></h3>
<p>The next tool is…mindful breathing. After a pause you put your awareness on your breath. By doing so you take your attention from out there and place it in here. You become centered, like being at the hub of a wheel. At the hub, your perspective broadens, becoming multifaceted. Your assumptions soften. You realize you are not the pains you feel, or the thoughts you have—they are only one or two spokes of your wheel.</p>
<h3><strong>Feeling Weight</strong></h3>
<p>Now that you have paused your doing and your thinking and have centered yourself through mindful breathing, you enter a present moment experience by feeling weight. When you pay attention to the downward pull of gravity you enter into the physicality of the here and now. The next time you are putting the groceries away, doing the dishes, or lifting a hammer, feel the weight as you move the object through space. The next time you are holding the hand of someone you love, pause, breathe, and feel its weight. Rather than holding the hand up, let it rest in your palm. You will experience a positive life-affirming sensation.</p>
<p>This is a present moment experience.</p>
<p>Try it. Right now. Wherever you are.</p>
<ol>
<li>Pause. After reading steps 1, 2, and 3, let go of reading this article for now.</li>
<li>Become mindful of your breath—like an umbrella opening and closing.</li>
<li>Now shift your body from side to side. Feel its weight move through space.</li>
</ol>

<h2><strong>A Web of Suffering</strong></h2>
<p>My philosophy speaks of three aspects&#8211;stories, emotions, and physical holding patterns&#8211;that trap us in a web of suffering.</p>
<p><strong>Stories.</strong> We all have stories running through our minds. The mind thinks. That’s what it does.  But just because we have a thought doesn’t mean we have to believe it. How do we unstick ourselves from our thoughts—without fighting, struggling, or controlling? How do we experience our thoughts as something other than “Me?”</p>
<p><strong>Emotions. </strong>They are strong. They can overwhelm us in a second. Most of us are controlled by our emotions. When they say “Jump!” we say, “How high?” How can we fully feel the energy of our emotions running through our body without being utterly controlled by them? How can we unstick ourselves from our feelings, while living life fully?</p>
<p><strong>Physical Holding Patterns.</strong> Stiff shoulders, hunched postures, clenched jaws, migraine headaches, digestive problems: they all seem unconnected to emotions and thoughts. We believe we are stuck with these symptoms. We ingest drugs to mask them. But most of the time they are the direct ramification of “stories” and “feelings” being expressed through our bodies.</p>

<h2><strong>Why Don’t We Connect?</strong></h2>
<p>As a Trager practitioner and teacher for 26 years, I’ve learned that a person’s work is only as good as their connection to other people. This is true not only as a Trager practitioner, but for all professionals, for lawyers and mothers, for waiters and teachers. It’s not a stretch to say that the ability to connect is at the core of all professional and personal “success”.</p>

<p>Old baggage in the form of judgements, shame, defensiveness, anger, frustration, and pain get in the way and mask our connection. We get caught in the ego’s melodrama, lost either in past memories or future expectations.</p>
<p>To transcend this I’ve created profoundly simple tools. You might think that simple can’t be effective, but the opposite is true. I’ve spend many years distilling my teaching down to a few core concepts that can be used any time, any where.</p>

<p>When my life fell apart, when my marriage ended, when my family structure was crumbling all around me, these tools were my anchor in the storm.
